G-R 8th grade boys basketball 3 point record falls

January 20, 2013
Coach Steve Luethje , Reinbeck Courier

Thurs. Jan. 10th, G-R 8th grade Boys Basketball hosted AGWSR and we lost a heartbreaker 42-44, now 4-3 on season, as our last second shot bounced off the front rim when time expired, to win it. The Rebel's energy level was huge, our players played smart and skillful, we just needed one more break here or there. This was a game either team could have won; AGWSR was an undefeated team, so I guarantee we are the best 4-3 team in the area. Joe Smoldt had 5 three point baskets, as IAHSAA began counting Junior High 3 point shots last year for scoring and this most ever in J.H. Rebel game. He finished with 22 pts, and Thomas Mussig found his game again contributing with 12 pts, Matt Roeding 4 pts, Tyler Pierce and Erik Knaack 2 pts each, followed by Alex Tscherter 1 steal, Jed Peterson 3 rebounds, and Spencer Goos 1 huge rebound. Our upcoming schedule is, Jan 14 at Grundy Center, Jan 15th at Union, Jan 17th at Radcliffe, Jan 22 at Gladbrook vs. East Marshall, and our final game is Jan 28th at Gladbrook vs. A-P, with starting time of 4:15 p.m. for 8th graders, and 7th grade boys game to follow.

G-R 8th Boys BB get win over Spartans

Monday, Jan. 14th, G-R 8th grade Boys Basketball traveled to Grundy Center and we won the game 43-36, now 5-3 on season. This was a well coach Grundy Center team that was trying to pull out the border win against the Rebels. Our Rebels found themselves making many defensive mistakes that are somewhat uncharacteristic for this team as we gave up a double digit lead, and game control. We managed to regroup and fight back to secure this win. I left thinking maybe that was not so bad, as we grew up a little during this game, these young Rebels dug down and positively responded to adversity. This was team victory with 6 players scoring and we were led by Joe Smoldt who had 21 pts, Thomas Mussig and Matt Roeding 6 pts each, Tyler Pierce and Erik Knaack 4 pts each, and Alex Tscherter 2 pts, with Jed Peterson 4 rebounds, and Jaden McGhee with big defense stop towards the end of the game. We have 4 games left and our upcoming schedule is, Jan 15th at Union, Jan 17th at Radcliffe, Jan 22 at Gladbrook vs. East Marshall, our final game is Jan 28th at Gladbrook vs. A-P, with starting time of 4:15 p.m. for 8th graders, and 7th grade boys game to follow.
