Dear Editor,

In October we celebrate Pork Month. We are fortunate to have access to safe, nutritious and economical pork. As a producer, it is a privilege to provide quality products from my farm to your plate.

Iowa and Grundy County farmers have a long history of raising pigs. Currently, Iowa ranks first in the nation with the most pigs in the country. As a county, Grundy ranked 83rd in the nation with pig inventory according to the 2012 Census of Agriculture conducted by the USDA.

Hog production is supported by many different businesses. These are important employers for our communities. Pigs raised in Grundy County consume corn and soybeans that are grown here. This adds value to those crops. The nutrient by product from the pigs makes great natural fertilizer for next year's crops. When hogs are ready for market, they go to nearby harvest facilities. These operations are suppliers of safe pork ready for the distribution chain.

I appreciate our local grocery retailers and restaurant owners for featuring pork throughout the year. From classic to innovative, pork recipes are versatile and pork is the most widely consumed meat around the world.I appreciate consumers for supporting pork producers.

Sincerely,

Laura Hommel
