Class of 1972 reunion

September 24, 2017
Reinbeck Courier

With a rural Grundy County backdrop, the home of Walter and Karen Cheeseman was the site for the Reinbeck High School class of 1972's 45th Class Reunion on Saturday night. Even though the sky was overcast, the mood was extremely sunny for the sixteen class members and four spouses attending this event. The familiar camaraderie that was once so matter-of-fact was evident from the start for this group that had spent their childhood and adolescent school years (1959 to 1972) together. We caught up on everyone's lives to the present. The mix was about half and half of those who are still working to those who have retired. Pam Eriksen Gavin was proudly celebrating her eighth day of retirement on Saturday! It also seems that there are more grandchildren than there were just five years ago. What interesting stories we all loved sharing and hearing! One topic that everyone had an opinion about was what each class member was doing for health insurance since retirement, discussing Medicare that we will all be eligible for within the next two years, and the number of us who have taken early Social Security to the others who are on the verge of taking it. These conversations were so different from those we had twenty-five years ago at our 20th reunion. Time does move on. Julie Moser Bachman also gave the toast to our departed class members: Janice Lorenz Van Hauen, Rick Murphy, LuAnn Freed Schreck and Duane Hansen. Mention was also made of the death of Brenda Ennenga who left our class in 1962 and moved to Grundy Center. Out-of-state classmates attending were Bill Ehlers from Federal Way, Washington; Martin Schelling from Grapevine, Texas; Pam Eriksen Gavin from Omro, Wisconsin; and Karen Hall School from Hampstead, North Carolina.

Before classmates began departing late into the night, we made plans for our 50th class reunion that will be hosted by Curt and Cindy Plaehn at their Gladbrook acreage on July 2, 2022. Our class will also be trying something new on Friday night, July 1, 2022. We will be hosting a Meet and Greet for members of the Reinbeck High School classes of 1971, 1973, 1974 and 1975. And, of course, anyone from any other class would be welcomed to join us that night. (The last all-school reunion was held during the Reinbeck Centennial celebration in 1976.) We are currently looking for a venue to accommodate us. Tim Robinson will handle all communications; however, he will need help in obtaining the addresses of the other classes' members. Brenda Marts Dinsdale (class of 1973) and Cindy Royer Plaehn (class of 1975) will assist with their classes. He will be contacting Kathy Thede Beenken (class of 1974) and Janelle Plaehn Ramsey (class of 1975) for additional help. Cindy Petersen High will contact her brother Ron Petersen and others to obtain addresses from the class of 1971. Please contact Tim Robinson if you'd be willing to help gather these addresses by e-mail to tim.robinson1@mchsi.com or text to 515.508.1002. The class of 1972 will take care of the rest.

As all good things do, our perfect evening came to an end. We appreciate Walter and Karen Cheeseman for their hospitality.
