JV Rebel football

September 13, 2017
Mike Bengen , Reinbeck Courier

Welcome back to another football season for the G-R Rebels. I apologize for my tardiness but here we go with our inaugural season of 8 man football at the JV level. I was unable to attend these young men's first outing at Riceville which resulted in a close game but with a poor start to the game we came up short. Blame it on the long bus trip or whatever you would like but the coaches were disappointed in the performance of the Rebels in the first half. The second half was 10 times better and the consensus was if we play two halves like the second, we win this contest. So much for excuses. These guys know what it takes for us to be successful and they hear it all of the time. It was also our first action of the year so there was bond to be some inconsistencies.

On Tuesday September 5, 2017 the Dons from Don Bosco travelled to the Pit for our home opener. DB since going 8 man has been a very successful program. They are the defending state champions in 8 man so we knew this would be a great measuring stick for us to see how we compare. The game started off very well for us. We kicked off and took over on downs around midfield. We put together a nice drive with Keagan Giesking going into the end zone from his quarterback spot from the 5 yard line. He followed with the PAT run and we were off to a 8-0 start. After a DB punt, Keagan broke free for a 30 yard TD run. He then passed to Kale Hasselmann for the PAT and we led 16-0. DB got on the board the next drive to make the score 16-8. Keagan then again broke free for a 60 yard romp and a 22-8 lead at the half. Don Bosco opened the second half scoring but we answered with a 7 yard pass from Keagan to Aiden Wyatt. Kale again caught the PAT and we lea 30-16 going into the 4th quarter. DB added a late score and Aiden ended all threats of a loss with an interception in the final minute. This evens our mark at 1-1 for the year. This was a very good win for the Rebels as the coaches saw many good things from these guys. Very good effort and determination on our part and I know the execution will continue to get better under the direction of Coaches Dillan Trunck, James Weida and Doug Egesdal.

Keagan led the way with 175 yards rushing on 20 carries and 3 TD's. He also passed for a score and 2 PAT's and score on a PAT run himself. Colton Clark added 27 yards rushing followed by Aiden with 15 and Eli Thede with 6 yards. Jackson Kiburis and Jace Petersen also toted the ball to help us get to our 225 yard total. Keagan's 2 completions were to Aiden and Eli for a total of 24 yards. Defensively Keagan had 8 stops followed closely by Eli and Colton with 6 each. Jackson, Kale, and Sam Mussig 5, Aidan Walters 3, Jace and Aiden 2, Tyler Beenken, Tyler Sparks and Casey Knaack 1 each round out our tackle totals. Colton recovered a fumble and Aiden added the interception for our take aways. Danny Gleissner, Tyson Creswell, James Anders, Cole Engel, Auston Wittgreve, and D'Mico Rodriguez were all involved and active in this win but had no stats. I have to commend all of these guys for their effort and energy whether they were in the game or not. All players were focused and into the game. It was a great atmosphere and a great victory. Keep it up guys.

Our next action will be Monday, September 11 at home against AGWSR at 6:30 p.m. We then will go on the road on September 18 to Colo-NESCO for a 6 p.m. kickoff. September 25 and October 2 we will be back at home versus Baxter the first week and Collins-Maxwell the second. Both of these will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Come out and see the future Rebels and their quest to master the 8 man football game.
