The Black Hawk Nighthawks 4-H Club doesn't have regular monthly meetings in the summer, but we've still been busy and have several news items to share.

On Thursday, June 29, club member Sadie Brockett was honored to receive a 4-H State Project Award Certificate in the area of Photography at an Awards Ceremony on the Iowa State University campus during the closing of the State 4-H Conference. In order to receive this award, an application must be filed by February 1st. There were 154 youth from 56 counties who submitted 247 applications in 5 award areas (State Project Awards, State 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program, State 4-H Council, National 4-H Council, National 4-H Congress, and National 4-H Conference). Interviews were held at the Iowa State University campus on April 1st and award letters were mailed out April 14th. Sadie received one of only 50 Project Awards to members in 26 counties; she was the only recipient from Grundy County. In addition to the certificate, Sadie was awarded a check for $100.

On Friday, June 30th, members of the club along with several parents and siblings were treated to an awesome adventure exploring the Maquoketa Caves State Park. Members Lily & Stella Heinzel helped coordinate a fun outing with their parents helping out as tour guides and grandparents serving a great meal and spectacular hospitality. Club member Audrey Leyen's family helped with transportation to and from the caves. We learned about the geography of the caves and different types of rocks and the members had great time walking, crawling and wiggling through the various caves.

The annual Reinbeck 4th of July parade included a float sponsored by the Grundy County Fair Board who graciously invited our club members to join them. We had a couple members who were able to ride on the 4-H float, while other members were on the FFA float or in the band.

On Wednesday, July 5th, club members participated in a painting project as part of fairgrounds decorating. Members met at the fairgrounds in Grundy Center to paint mini barn quilts that will be used to decorate for the County Fair later this month. Our club members painted the design "Fire Wheel" for our club and older members helped with the design "Mosaic Patch". Look for these and several other designs around the fairgrounds at the fair, July 18 July 23.

Upcoming events will be the Grundy County Fair and the Iowa State Fair along with a club outing to Lost Island.
