JV Rebel football

October 16, 2016
Mike Bengen , Reinbeck Courier

On Monday October 3 the Rebels headed to the home field at "The Pit" to entertain the Cyclones from Denver. Coach Barrett and his staff have really established a fine program and certainly one that needs to be reckoned with each year. They have made the jump to class 1A this year and we knew they would be very solid and we would have to play 40 minutes of really good football to send them on their way feeling bad for themselves. This night did not go quite as we planned.

We started very slowly with little energy and emotion. The Cyclones proceeded to shove it down our throats as they drove right down the field to score the first touchdown just 3 ? minutes in. We then took over and made a couple of firsts downs before we were intercepted by Denver and they returned the ball into the end zone for an early 14-0 lead. How would these young men react and respond to this adversity? At first our response was not so good. We had guys that needed a break or needed to come off of the field for some reason. We proceeded to give up another score early in the second quarter to go down 22-0. Then the light went off after we spotted the Cyclones this many points. Colton Clark busted one for a 58 yard score to spark the Rebels. We had life!! We recovered the squib kick and marched the ball down and got Colton the ball on a screen pass from 10 yards out to pull within 22-13 at the half. The second half started about the same as the first half with Denver controlling the line of scrimmage and the game as they popped in 2 more scores to take a comfortable 36-13 lead into the final stanza. We were able to put together one more good drive and Kaleb Hendricks topped it off with a 1 yard TD plunge to pull us within 36-19 but we ran out of time. This drops us to 2-3 on the year with two left to play.

Colton lead the way with 78 yards on the ground and 31 yards receiving with 2 touchdowns. Kaleb added 58 yards and a score. Tyler Tscherter had a career high 165 yards passing on 8 completions with 1 being a TD. Bronson Wrage caught 2 balls for 52 yards and Eli Thede, Aiden Wyatt, Jace Petersen, and Kaleb all caught a pass on this evening. Offensively we put together some solid numbers with 151 rushing and 178 passing. We just had trouble shutting down the Cyclones. That was the difference in the game. Our defense was on the field way too long and we needed to generate more scores offensively. Bronson led the way on the defensively side of the ball with 6 stops followed closely by Jackson Kiburis and D'Mico Rodriguez with 5 each. Eli and Sam Mussig 4, Kaleb, Colton, Aiden, Jace, Aidan Walters, and Reece Gilbert 2, Tyler Beenken, Tyler Tscherter, and Kale Hasselman each added 1 tackle apiece. Colton recovered 2 fumbles and Kale jumped on a squib kick for us to give us possessions. We still have many things to work on for next week but we will be ready and we will continue to get better each week. We need to play with more urgency. You should not want to leave the field. You have to want to be in the game to make plays. You cannot just check out when things are not going perfectly. We need to suck it up and compete on every play. You have got to be the guy who will make plays and want s to make plays. This cannot happen with you on the sideline. We have 2 games left. We have to improve on our attitude to compete. We have got to push ourselves into an uncomfortable place. Be the best teammate and football player you can be and we will improve and get better as a team. We all have to be all in to be successful.

Next week on Monday October 10 we travel to Hudson to do battle with the Pirates. Our final action will be an 8 man game on Monday October 17 at Ackley against the AGWSR Cougars. All of these contests will kick off at 6 pm. Take a look at the future Rebels.
