JV Rebel football

September 18, 2016
Mike Bengen , Reinbeck Courier

The youthful Rebels made the trip north after the Labor Day holiday to Dike to take on the Wolverines of Dike New Hartford. This game happened on Tuesday September 6 which is a bit out of sorts because we usually play on Monday. I am just looking for some reason why we played this game with no emotion, energy, and very little effort. We had flashes of brilliance and then 2 or 3 plays later we were back to taking plays off and spectating. DNH is a good football team but they are not 29-0 better than we are. We have to find that competitive switch and get it turned on and keep it on for a full game. Until we compete on every down, I know the results are not going to change. We all need to focus on getting better and practicing and playing with a purpose. This needs to happen Monday through Thursday. This is fixable and we will get it fixed. This is a talented group of kids that just need to focus on their task and take care of business. I guarantee people better watch out for us going forward.

This game started off well for us as we were playing pretty well defensively. It was pretty much a stalemate through the first quarter and then we lost it. DNH shot off 3 consecutive TD's and stormed into the half with a 22-0 lead. We had a horrible second quarter. We could not do anything on either side of the ball. Coach Weida and Coach Trunck made some halftime adjustments along with some advice and inspiration. The Rebels came out and played a pretty darn good second half only allowing 1 more touchdown. We still struggled offensively but it felt like everyone was giving effort and actually caring what they and their teammates were doing on the field. We fell 29-0 to drop us to 0-2 on the year.

Kaleb Hendricks led us in rushing with 72 yards on 21 carries. Colton Clark added 28 yards on 8 carries, Jackson Kiburis and Tyler Tscherter combined for 18 yards passing for our offensive totals. Colton and Aiden Wyatt each caught 1 ball as receivers. Not a whole lot happening on offense but better than last week. We totaled 106 total yards this week so we are improving. Defensively Kaleb again led the way with 9 tackles. William Blakesley had a solid night from his defensive lineman position with 7 tackles. Colton, Jackson, and Kale Hasselman added 5 stops each followed by Sam Mussig and Jace Petersen with 4, Eli Thede and Bronson Wrage 3, Aidan Walters, Tyler, and Aiden 2, Tyler Beenken and Cullen Eiffler 1 to finish off our tackles. These guys along with Reece Gilbert, Tyler Sparks, Tyson Creswell, Cameron Edwards, and D'Mico Rodriguez will continue to work hard and get better each week. We have a lot of things to work on for next week but we will be ready and improved to take on the North Tama Redhawks. This game will be on Monday September 12 for another 6 pm start. The following Monday September 19 we will be back at home against the Wolverines from GMG for another 6 pm kick. Come out and see these future Friday night Rebels.
