JV Rebel football

September 11, 2016
Mike Bengen , Reinbeck Courier

The 2016 football season is upon us. After an unbelievable 2015 state championship finish in Class A, we were all ready to get going again. This years' squad has been working hard to continue the tradition of G-R Rebel football. Coach Dillan Trunck, Coach Doug Egesdal, Coach Sean Babinat, and Coach James Weida have been busy getting these guys ready for the opening night. On August 29 we entertained the Spartans from Grundy Center for our first kickoff. We knew we would have our work cut out for us and we also knew it was going to take 40 minutes of good, solid football. I guess I should say 32 minutes of football. We were delayed 3 times for lightning strikes so we did not even start this contest until almost 7:45 pm.

The delay seemed to affect us as we started off very flat. We did not get much going offensively or defensively. Grundy Center busted through us twice in the first quarter to grab a 14-0 lead that would hold up until halftime. We made some adjustments and regrouped at the half but on the third play of the second half GC busted a long TD run and we trailed 21-0. The Spartans added one more score late in the game to take a 27-0 victory from the Rebels. We totaled 21 positive yards on the evening which equates to not a lot of success on the scoreboard. We have a lot of work to do but these guys are up for it. All of these issues are fixable and that is what we all need to focus on. Execution and effort will be keys moving forward.

Kaleb Hendricks led the way in the rushing category with 30 yards on 14 carries. Colton Clark added 4 yards, Jackson Kiburis and Tyler Tscherter combined for 9 yards passing for our offensive totals. Kaleb caught 2 balls for 8 yards and Colton caught 1 for 1 yard. Not a whole lot happening on offense on the rainy August night. Defensively Kaleb led the way with 8 tackles and a fumble recovery. Kale Hasselman added 7 stops followed by Colton with 4 tackles and an interception. Aidan Walters had 3 tackles, William Blakesley, Sam Mussig, and Eli Thede 2, Tyler Beenken, Aiden Wyatt, Tyler, Jackson, Jace Petersen, Cullen Eiffler, Bronson Wrage, and Tyson Creswell all had 1 stop apiece. The rest of this years' squad consists of Reece Gilbert, Tyler Sparks, and D'Mico Rodriguez. We have a ton of things to work on for next week but we will be ready and improved to take on the Wolverines from Dike New Hartford. We will head to Dike on Tuesday September 6 for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Then on Monday September 12 we will then travel to Traer to take on the Redhawks from North Tama for another 6 pm start. See you on the sidelines.
