Blood drive a success

September 4, 2016

Reinbeck American Legion Auxiliary sponsored an American Red Cross Blood Drive August 22.

Thanks to the work of volunteers and 47 blood donors it was a great success. Not only did we meet our goal of 33 units we exceeded it!! But more importantly WE SAVED LIVES!!!!

You have probably all heard the facts before about why it is important to give blood. I will repeat for the sake of everyone who helped and donated to remind them how much they have done to help others.

You are needed to give blood because the American Red Cross provides more than 40% of America's total need.

One donation can help save up to three lives 36,000 units are needed daily in the US. A single car accident victim can require as many as 100 pints of blood.

The average transfusion is approximately 3 pints. Approximately 1.68 million people will be diagnosed with cancer this year many of whom will need your blood.

You can give blood every 56 days double red cells (2 units at one time) can give every 112 days. Only about 10% of eligible blood donors give which means we have plenty of room for improving our numbers.

When you come to give blood, you will receive a health screening to be sure you can give blood this in itself is a nice thing to receive and the Red Cross staff are always so friendly and helpful. They recommend to make your donation experience a good one you should remember to: 1) Drink an extra 16 oz of water or nonalcoholic fluid before donating, 2) Eat a healthy meal before you give, 3) Make an appointment and better yet go online and complete your health history this saves you time and keeps your processing time to under an hour, 4) Take time to have a snack and drink immediately following your donation.

Legion Auxiliary does 2 Blood Drives every year and our next campaign will be December 1, from 2- 6 p.m.
