Grundy Center cook goes hog wild in State Fair win

Phil Dicks of Grundy Center won first place and a $300 cash award in the Des Moines Register's Hog (and Corn) Heaven competition, judged Wednesday at the 2016 Iowa State Fair.

Anita Van Gundy of Des Moines earned second place and $200. Rebecca Howe of Des Moines claimed third place and $100.

Contestants were tasked to create an award worthy dish using both pork and corn as main ingredients.

Entries were judged on taste, appearance and originality.

The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 203 divisions, 809 classes and over 9,925 entries at this year's Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.
