Long time Reinbeck resident Don Rhoades named 2016 parade grand marshal

June 28, 2016
Reinbeck Courier

Don Rhoades, 98, of Reinbeck, has been a life long resident of Reinbeck. He attended first - twelfth grade in the Reinbeck Community school system. His high school career involved all aspects of sports, such as basketball captain, football quarterback and track. He was a part of the 1936 440 relay team including Don, Russell Roberts, Giles and Gilbert Eslinger. This team held the record for twenty-two years. Dan graduated in 1938 as the senior class president.

After graduation Don met and married June Lapham, his wife of seventy years. They raised five children, Allan, Donna, Steve, Linda and Rick. There are nine grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and on great great grandchild. Don and June enjoyed music and dancing and were good enough to pass that onto their children. He all passed on the love of his Iowa Hawkeyes.

Don was drafted during WWII into the Seabees where he spent two years overseas in Okinawa, Japan. Upon returning home, Don farmed and worked at Voorhies Grain in Voorhies, Iowa. Basketball again entered his life. He coached a AAU team made up of a number of local athletes from the Reinbeck area. The team won the state AAU championship in Marshalltown.

Upon retiring from Hawkeye Corrugated box factory in Cedar Falls, he continued working in the local grocery store for Sandy and Ray Rannfeldt and for Darren and Sue Trunck. At the grocery store, he was able to be the social kind of guy that he is. He was able to see people from the community and develop many friendships with a younger generation working at the store. This allowed him to keep up with school activities and be a loyal Reinbeck Rams and a GR Rebels fan. Don has always felt blessed to be a part of the Reinbeck community, calling it, "God's Country."

Don feels thankful to the committee and community for the honor of being the 2016 grand marshal.
