Fishing Derby report - Another great day

June 12, 2016
Kevin Williams - Grundy County Conservation Director , Reinbeck Courier

Saturday, June 4 was the day. Grundy County Lake was the place. The annual Fishing Derby sponsored by Peoples Savings bank was another success.

Thirty people of all ages registered for the event, but with parents, spouses, friends and siblings it made for a good crowd. For their five dollars they weren't guaranteed a fish but they were guaranteed a door prize.

There were many familiar faces and new ones, as well. There were some that brought boats and others that fished from shore. I am confident that everyone brought their favorite baits and lures. No rain this year that had come during the night. There were reports in and around Dike from 1.5 all the way to almost 2.5 inches! That very likely accounted for some of the poorer fishing results, but everyone had a great time.

People participating weren't required to have fishing licenses due to the fact that it was the Iowa's free fishing weekend. The event registration began at 6 AM and ran this year until noon. Some anglers were back to the shelter well before the noon closing time while a few were casting lines right up to the cutoff hoping for that winner.

At the noon close of the derby, the following anglers won their respective largest fish categories: Panfish Robby Forbes and bass Jake Ascher. The catfish proved elusive as none were turned in this year.

Each of the winners received an impressive fishing gear package tailored to their fish category which included rod and reel. The fishing derby is sponsored by Peoples Savings Bank. Thanks also go to the generosity of Norby's, Doc's Catfish Bait, Ubbens and Scheels.

Everyone went away with a door prize and good memories. That's what the fishing derby is all about.
