FORT DODGE - Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck shot better, but so did everyone else at the Class 2A boys state golf meet Saturday at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course.

Jesper Holke-Farnam shot a 74 - after shooting an 80 the day before - to lead the Spartans through the final day of the state tournament.

After a sluggish start on Friday, Spartan golfer Jake Bangasser, who shot 77 on his final day, said on Friday night he was hopeful the team could come back with better play and make a run at getting to the fifth, sixth or seventh place.

The Spartans shot 323 and were two strokes out of seventh and nine strokes out of sixth. After shooting a 318 the second day, finishing with a 641. The Spartans gained on those in front of them, but it wasn't enough.

Sixth-place Des Moines Christian fell from fifth to sixth with a 638 and South Winneshiek knocked off two strokes to tally a 640, besting the Spartans by just one stroke. Even fifth-place Sheldon was within reach with a 635.

Joe Smoldt entered for Matt Roeding on day two, however neither scored during the state meet. Roeding shot an 84 and Smoldt with an 85. Cam Murphy shot an 83 on both days; senior Austin Burroughs shot a 168 on the weekend and Jared Freeman scored for the Spartans on day two, tallying an 84 and 170 overall.
