GRUNDY CENTER - Life is full of complex and confusing issues. At the top of the list for many older adults is health care coverage and related insurance needs. The Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), a free health insurance counseling service of the State of Iowa, is looking for a few people to serve as volunteer health insurance counselors for residents of Grundy and surrounding counties.

SHIIP counselors assist anyone who has questions or problems related to Medicare, Medicare supplement insurance, long term care insurance and related issues. A counselor has been available at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital for many years, but there is a current need for another volunteer to serve area seniors.

Counselors complete an online training course, receive three days of intensive in-person training, a comprehensive SHIIP resource manual, regular support and follow-up training from the Iowa Insurance Division. Volunteers who serve at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital also complete the hospital's volunteer application process and orientation.

SHIIP may be the right volunteer opportunity for you if you enjoy meeting people, like to solve puzzles, can face obstacles with determination and good humor, have good computer skills, are a good listener and believe that knowledge is power.

For more information about becoming a SHIIP volunteer counselor and to review the counselor job description, please call Volunteer Coordinator Erin Schildroth at Grundy County Memorial Hospital 319-824-4147. SHIIP is sponsored by the Iowa Insurance Division and co-sponsored by Grundy County Memorial Hospital in Grundy Center.
