DIKE - Grundy Center's tradition and Gladbrook-Reinbeck's firepower found each other at the right time, and the two school's shared boys' golf program is headed to state.

The GC/G-R Spartans scored a scintillating 305 on Friday at Fox Ridge Golf Club to claim the Class 2A district title and earn a spot at next weekend's state meet at Lakeside Municipal Golf Course in Fort Dodge.

It's the seventh state berth in eight seasons for Grundy Center, and Gladbrook-Reinbeck's first appearance since winning the school's first state title of any kind in 1999.

The Spartans distanced themselves from the rest of the field by firing four counting scores in the 70s with another to spare. Ninth-ranked GC/G-R carded a 305 and will be joined by runner-up Clear Lake (317) at state. Second-ranked Aplington-Parkersburg (318) was a stroke shy of qualifying for the spring finale.

Cam Murphy shot a 2-over-par round of 74 to lead GC/G-R, carding 37-37 in a day that included seven birdies. He was part of a three-way tie for the second-best score of the day, as Dike-New Hartford's Royce Weber was medalist with a 1-over 73.

Aiding Murphy's charge to state were Jesper Holke-Farnam (76), Jake Bangasser (77) and Matt Roeding (78). Jared Freeman finished in with a 79 and Austin Burroughs shot 82 as the Spartans' highest four scores still would have claimed them the district crown.
