Facility improvements underway for Grundy County Memorial Hospital

May 22, 2016
Reinbeck Courier

GRUNDY CENTER - A long-anticipated renovation project at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital will address structural needs of the original building while expanding fast-growing health care services. The Grundy County Board of Supervisors approved a key piece of the project's financing with the sale of $5 million general obligation urban renewal bonds last week, while the hospital's Board of Commissioners has awarded construction bids.

Patient visits to the hospital's Specialty Clinic have steadily climbed over the past ten years, and the project increases clinic space by fifty percent to accommodate additional medical specialties, as well as providing increased privacy in the registration area. The clinic and a new radiology women's center will expand into space now used for administrative and support functions of the hospital.

The renovation project provides a new roof for the original two-story portion of the hospital, as well as new windows and new mechanical systems for the 1952 building, which has not been used for patient care since a new inpatient area opened in 2009. All administrative and support functions will move to the second floor once the project is complete in mid-2017.

"It's an important project in the life of our hospital," says Jennifer Havens, CEO. "When the hospital began a facility improvement plan more than ten years ago, the decision was made to retain the original building as new patient care additions were completed. Now it's time to finish what was started by giving the original building a much-needed upgrade," explains Havens. "The project also provides space to expand the specialty clinic, which meets the needs of our patients by giving them convenient access to a variety of specialty providers."

Havens says the $7.5 million project will be financed by the bond sale, $2.5 million in hospital cash reserves, and private fundraising. Construction manager is Graham Construction, while Cardinal Construction is the general contractor. The renovation will be accomplished in three phases so that hospital operations will not be disrupted during the project.

Grundy County Memorial Hospital is a 25-bed critical access hospital affiliated with UnityPoint Health Allen Hospital, and the UnityPoint Health system.
