Power grid upgrades coming to Reinbeck

Work will increase reliability and add growth potential

May 15, 2016
Reinbeck Courier

REINBECK, Iowa The power grid in Reinbeck is getting an upgrade and overhaul. For the last few years, crews for Alliant Energy have been installing new equipment and replacing older equipment to improve reliability and make room for future growth in the area. The project will wrap up late this year.

In total, crews are installing 558 new poles, adding 35 miles of new power lines above ground and putting in 9 miles of new power lines underground. This is an investment of more than $6.1 million in the local power grid.

In addition, crews are installing new lightning protection to reduce outages and more robust equipment to better withstand storms. A newly built substation is already serving some customers in Reinbeck and Morrison. The old substation will be retired when the project is complete.

"We appreciate everyone's patience while our crews work to build a better system in town," said Carla Gall, senior manager of customer operations. "As we work this summer, we're asking drivers to pay extra attention to crews working in the area. We want everyone to be safe."

This work is expected to last through the year. Some customers might experience brief outages as a result of the upgrade work.
