Spartan boys win own invitational

GRUNDY CENTER - One stroke meant the difference between first and second place, and the Grundy Center/Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys' golf team was on the low side in Saturday's final standings.

The Spartan boys golf team won their own invitational by one stroke, shooting 332 to edge runner-up Roland-Story (333) in the seven-team tournament at Town & Country Golf Club.

GC/G-R's Jake Bangasser carded a 7-over-par round of 79 to earn runner-up medalist honors in the 18-hole event, trailing Roland-Story's Grant Waline by one shot.

The Spartans' six varsity golfers all finished in the top 15 individually. Austin Burroughs shot an 83, Cam Murphy posted an 84 and Jesper Holke-Farnam finished with an 86 to round out the Spartans' team scoring. Jared Freeman (88) and Matt Roeding (89) rounded out GC/G-R's roster.

BCLUW placed fourth with a 371 team total, trailing Union (361). The Comets were led by Josh Sharp, who tied for the third-best round of the day with his 10-over 82. Brad Barkema contributed a 93, Lane Stanley shot 95 and Josh Myers added a 101.

GMG totaled 430 for sixth place, trailing Hudson (397) while coming in ahead of Waterloo Christian (495). The Wolverines were led by Blaze Krull and Aaron Fleming, who shot 101 and 102, respectively. Conner Stonewall (112) and Ryan Hunt (115) also contributed to the GMG scoring.
