Robert D. Nissen, 92, longtime resident of Iowa City, died Tuesday, March 1, 2016 at Lantern Park Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Coralville.

Funeral Services were held on Friday, March 4 at 11:00 am at Lensing Funeral & Cremation Service in Iowa City. Rebecca Carver officiated. Visitation was held Thursday, March 3 from 5:00 to 7:00 at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.

Robert was born July 19, 1923 in Reinbeck, Iowa, the son of Hugo & Helen (Hoeg) Nissen. Growing up in Reinbeck, Robert served as a Sgt. in the US Army during WWII. Robert met and later married Ruby Schroeder on March 30, 1958 in Sheffield, Iowa. The couple moved to Iowa City in 1961.

Roberts career spanned over 30 years in the grocery business in a number of towns in Iowa, including as manager at a Piggly Wiggly store in Cedar Rapids for 5 years and at the Randall's Super Valu at Sycamore Mall in Iowa City. Robert retired in 1985.

Survivors include his children, daughter, Kimberly Nissen of Iowa City and her son Tyler (Andrea); son, Mike Nissen (Shari) of Freeport, Ill. and their children, Dustin (Stephanie), Brian (Alexa), Alexis and Annie; daughter, Patty Kennedy of West Liberty and her children, T.J.(Michelle), LaShawna, Natoshia and Shane; six great-grandchildren and a close family friend, Les Gerecz of Iowa City.

His parents, his wife Ruby and a brother Warren died before him.
