Flu season is here

February 7, 2016
Reinbeck Courier

Did you know that individuals with the flu can spread it to others up to 6 feet away? Influenza virus is spread mainly by droplets from coughing, sneezing or even talking. This method of transmission is called "direct" person to person.

The most common way to spread this flu virus is "indirectly", meaning an individual with influenza coughs or sneezes on a surface area or into their hands then touches a surface area, such as grocery cart then another individual touches that surface area and then their own mouth or nose.

Influenza is very contagious and most healthy adults may be able to infect others beginning on day 1 before symptoms even develop and up to 5-7 days after becoming sick. Symptoms of Influenza can start anywhere from day 1 to 4 days after the virus enters the body, or exposure.

Best way to prevent from getting sick and spreading to others is:

Get your influenza vaccination

Cover your cough with your elbow- not your hand

Wash your hands often

Keep your hands away from your face.

Further, frequently touched surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected at home, work and school, especially if someone is ill. This virus will generally peak in February and it is NEVER to late to get your flu shot!

Call Grundy County Public Health if you or your loved one needs their flu shot, if you have a child that has not received a flu vaccine and needs one, please call and ask for Wendy at 319-824-6312.
