JV Rebel football

November 1, 2015
Mike Bengen , Reinbeck Courier

On Monday October 19 the Rebels travelled to Grundy Center to battle the Spartans in our JV season finale. We were excited and ready to go after our unexpected bye week. With a week off, it being our last game of the year, and it being a rivalry game, how could we not be fired up and ready to play? The problem was we were not. It was a disappointing finish to our year which had been on the upswing every week. Improvement was taking place each time out but the first half against the Spartans was very sloppy, unemotional, and full of miscues. We trailed 20-0 at the half. We made some plays the second half but were thoroughly outplayed by Grundy Center as we fell 28-6 to finish our year at 3-4.

Josh Peterson had a solid football game for us on both sides of the ball. He rushed for 115 yards on 16 carries with our only touchdown and had 14 tackles to lead our defense. Matt Johannsen added 26 yards on the ground and Colton Clark added 7 of his own rushing yards. Jackson Kiburis threw for 55 yards with Caden Kickbush grabbing 3 of those balls for 39 yards. Cael Wyatt and Colton each had 8 yards receiving and 5 tackles each on defense. Matt, Bronson Wrage, Rhett Barnes, and Seth Gretillat 4, Kyle Koppen and Slade Wager 3, Jackson 2, D'Mico Rodriguez, Joseph Pepe, William Blakesley, Tyler Beenken, and Lane Bowman all added 1 stop each. Spencer Goos recovered a fumble for us also.

Members of this years' squad include Slade Wager, Spencer Goos, Joseph Pepe, Noah Skornia, Walker Thede, Mason Skovgard, Cael Wyatt, Josh Peterson, Gage Murty, Rhett Barnes, Caden Kickbush, Matt Johannsen, William Blakesley, Seth Gretillat, Kyle Koppen, Bronson Wrage, Bryce Schick, Lane Bowman, Tyler Bennken, Jackson Kiburis, Kaleb Hendricks, Reece Gilbert, Tyson Creswell, D'Mico Rodriguez, Colton Clark and Tyler Sparks.

This group has some talent. They all must realize next season starts right now. We need to work hard getting bigger, faster, and stronger. We need to compete in winter and spring sports and if not involved in these sports, we need to get into the weight room and work hard on our strength, footwork, and agility. This has to be your decision. It will just not happen because it is one year later and we are all one year older. You will all need to make the commitment to continue G-R football success. Be proud of our program and be proud to be a member of G-R football. Take it to the next level. This will take some sacrifices but these must be made for you to become your best.

Lastly to close out another year, I appreciate the parents of these football players. We ask a lot out of these young men and that will continue.I appreciate your support for the G-R program. Speaking of our program, I have to throw out some accolades out to our coaching staff. Head Coach John Olson has assembled what I believe is one of the best staffs in the state. Coach Olson along with Darren Trunck, Brett Bengen, Andrew Billerbeck, Kirk Dinsdale, Dillan Trunck, Doug Egesdal, James Weida and Sean Babinat have spent countless hours watching film and scheming to prepare our guys for the season and every single game. No one really has any idea how hard these guys work. You all should be very thankful to have your sons in thee guys' hands during football season. G-R is having another great season and that is because of your kids and this coaching staff. This will continue through all of 2015-16 because I am sure G-R is going to have another memorable year. Until next year, I am signing off.
