Rebels secure 6th straight playoff berth

GLADBROOK - The Class A No. 7 Gladbrook-Reinbeck football team secured its sixth straight state playoff berth and gained a home game for the first round thanks to Friday's 33-14 District 4 victory over Wapsie Valley.

The Rebels (7-2, 5-1) led 33-0 at the half and eased to the win while eliminating Wapsie Valley (3-6, 2-4) from the postseason. It's the first time the Warriors have missed the playoffs since 2005.

Eric Stoakes and Jake Schuman both played a part in two touchdowns for G-R. Stoakes started the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run midway through the first quarter, and Kainen Hendricks had a 1-yard TD plunge later in the period.

Erik Knaack came up with a pick-six for the Rebel defense, and Schuman made it 27-0 with his 80-yard touchdown run. Schuman connected with Stoakes for a 30-yard scoring strike for G-R's final points.

Schuman finished with six rushing attempts for 111 yards, and Stoakes had 14 carries for 88 yards. Schuman was 8-for-19 passing for 138 yards to five different receivers.

Jacob Walters led the Gladbrook-Reinbeck defense with 8.5 tackles, Dalton Schwartz had 7.5 and Thomas Mussig finished with 6.5 tackles and a quarterback sack. Knaack had two interceptions.
