JV football

September 27, 2015
Mike Bengen , Reinbeck Courier

Monday September 14, 2015 brought the Comets from BCLUW to the Pit in Gladbrook for a matchup with our district opponent to the west. We have really focused on what we do and our execution and effort both in games and practice. As a coaching staff we were all anxious to see the results.

This game started out very slowly for us as we were making mistakes such a s fumbled snaps and handoffs, turnovers, and penalties. We were not very good the first half as it ended in a scoreless tie. The third quarter was much the same as we just could not get out of this funk we were in. We would have a good play and then 2 bad ones and just never got going. Early in the fourth quarter, we got a big stop on defense and forced a punt. Matt Johannsen fielded the punt and found the wall and returned the ball 37 yards to give us great field position for our first drive on the fourth quarter. On the second play of the drive Kaleb Hendricks busted one for a 26 yard touchdown run. Seth Gretillat added the PAT kick and we were now up 7-0. We held the Comets on the ensuing drive and proceeded to march down the field for the put it away TD. Josh Peterson powered in off the right side behind Kyle Koppen and Rhett Barnes and following another Seth PAT, we led 14-0 with about 3 minutes to go. We held BCLUW and went on for the victory. This moves us to 1-2 on the year.. The kids seemed to not have the effort and focus that we had last week. We need to make sure and find this every time out. We must be competitors all week long. This will make us all better. Continue to work hard and learn. .

Kaleb led the way with a career high 19 carries for 167 yards and a score. That is back to back games for Kaleb with over 100 yards and a TD. This is also a credit to our offensive linemen, Kyle, Rhett, Bronson Wrage, Bryce Schick, William Blakesley, D'Mico Rodriguez, and Tyler Beenken. Josh accounted for 19 yards and Matt 16 for our rushing stats. Colton Clark, Gage Murty, and Jackson Kiburis did a nice job in the backfield also. Defensively we were led by Matt and Rhett with 6 tackles apiece. Josh and Kaleb 4, Bronson and Bryce 3, Gage, Colton, Cael Wyatt, William, Kyle, and Tyler Sparks2, D'Mico, Reece Gilbert, Lane Bowman, and Seth all added 1 stop each to round out our tackles. Seth and Colton each had a pick and Bryce recovered a fumble for us also. Again, Effort = Results. We have to live by this every day and good things will happen. Bring it every day in practice and the game results will take care of themselves. We must focus on this and concentrate on the little things and getting better every day. I know this group will continue to work hard. Push yourself and your teammates to get better. Be proud of G-R Rebel football and make a difference each day.

On Monday September 21 we will travel to Denver for a battle with the always tough Cyclones. That game will be a 6 pm kickoff. Then on Monday September 28 we will travel to State Center to take on the Trojans from West Marshall at 6 pm. Come on out and see the future of Rebel football.
