JV Rebel football

September 20, 2015
Mike Bengen , Reinbeck Courier

It was a beautiful Tuesday September 8, 2015 and the Rebels played host to our neighbors to the north, the Dike New Hartford Wolverines. We really wanted to improve our play from last week but also knew we would have a strong test from DNH. We had a good week of practice and we were ready to go.

The game started out very quickly for us as we were rushing the ball very well. On the sixth play from scrimmage, Kaleb Hendricks broke for a 59 touchdown run. Seth Gretillat added the PAT kick and we were up 7-0 early. DNH responded very quickly as they returned the kickoff for their own score. Their PAT failed and we led 7-6 after one period. The second quarter saw both teams move the ball between the 30's but not much more than that. Halftime saw the score remain at 7-6. We stepped up and stopped DNH to start the second half and then put together a scoring drive that was capped off by a Colton Clark 1 yard plunge. The PAT was missed and we held a 13-6 lead. DNH answered with a score of their own and then after a turnover added another TD to take a 20-13 lead into the fourth quarter. We fought hard but just could not get that equalizer touchdown and we fell to the Wolverines dropping us to 0-2 on the year. The kids battled and competed this week which turned into some pretty good results. The real positive is we saw kids working hard and really caring about what they were doing. We need everyone on this page to continue to improve each and every practice and game. Our focus and execution was so much better this week and it will continue to get better every week. This is a good group of kids and I know they will work hard for Rebel football.

Caleb led the way with a career high 19 carries for 126 yards and a score. Colton added 32 yards from his fullback spot. Both him and Kaleb ran the ball extremely hard for positive results. Josh Peterson added 17 yards and Matt Johannsen 2 yards to round out our rushing stats. Jackson Kiburis added 6 positive yards rushing and was 4 of 8 passing for 26 more yards out of the quarterback spot. Matt caught 1 ball for 15, Seth 1 for 2, Mason Skovgard 1 for 7, and Cael Wyatt 1 for 2 from our receiving core. Defensively we hawked to ball very well this game and did a lot of gang tackling. That is exactly what we are after. 11 guys to the ball every play. Josh and Seth led the charge with 6 stops each followed by Mason and Matt with 5 apiece. Will Blakesley played one of his best games having 4 tackles and a fumble recovery. Caleb, Colton, and Kyle Koppen added 3, Cael and Bronson Wrage 2, Bryce Schick and D'Mico Rodriguez each had a tackle each and Bryce also added his first career interception. All in all, just a much better effort than last week. Effort = Results. We have to live by this every day and good things will happen. Bring it every day in practice and the game results will take care of themselves.

Our next action will be at 6 pm on Monday September 14 at Gladbrook versus BCLUW. On Monday September 21 we will travel to Denver for a battle with the always tough Cyclones. That game will also be a 6 pm kickoff. See you on the sidelines.
