JV Rebel football

September 13, 2015

The 2015 football season is upon us. It seems as though 2014 finished last week but here we are again. After a very successful 2014 runner-up finish in Class A, we were all ready to get going again. This years' squad has been working hard to continue the tradition of G-R Rebel football. Coach Dillan Trunck, Coach Doug Egesdal, and Coach James Weida have been busy getting these guys ready for the opening game. On August 31 we travelled to LaPorte City to take on the Union Knights. We knew we would have our work cut out for us as the Knights have a very good tradition, kids, and coaching staff. We would need to be ready to play for 40 minutes.

This first game started out very typical. Both teams made numerous mistakes and it started out sloppily played. Neither team could get anything going as the first quarter went by with neither team making a first down. I am not sure if the defenses were that good or the offenses were struggling that badly. Union began to click in the second quarter with 2 touchdowns to build a 12-0 lead at the half. We were still making many mistakes and were not playing with a lot of intensity. Sadly to say the second half was not much better as we struggled all night to get anything going. Offensively we were ineffective in every aspect of the game. We did not block well. We did not execute. We did not play hard. We missed many assignments. We failed to get a first down. We were defeated 19-0. Defensively we played well at times. We still have a long ways to go. We need to refocus and get things accomplished on the practice field and that will require intensity and concentration. We can do this. We will improve and get better. This group has potential. We need everyone on the same page and wanting the same thing. We are Rebel football and that has to mean something to everyone on this team.

Colton Clark led the way in the rushing category with 22 yards on 12 carries. Kaleb Hendricks added 8 yards, Jackson Kiburis 4, and Gage Murty 1 yard to make our total rushing yards 35. Jackson was also 2 of 6 passing for 3 yards. Matt Johannsen caught 1 ball for 7 yards and Seth Gretillat snatched 1 for a -4 yards. Defensively we were lead by Josh Peterson with 7 tackles followed closely by Walker Thede's 6 stops. Matt added 5, Rhett Barnes and Mason Skovgard 4, Kaleb, Bryce Schick, and Kyle Koppen 3, Colton, Cael Wyatt, Bronson Wrage, and Will Blakesley 2, and Gage and Seth each took on a stop to round out our tackle stats. Seth also intercepted a pass and Bronson recovered a fumble for us defensively. The rest of this years' squad consists of Reece Gilbert, Lane Bowman, Caden Kickbush, Tyler Sparks, Tyson Creswell, Jacob Burch, Tyler Beenken, and D'Mico Rodriguez. We have a ton of things to work on for next week but we will be ready and improved.

Our next action will be Tuesday, September 8 at home against Dike New Hartford. On Monday, September 14 we will then host the Comets from BCLUW. Both of these games will kickoff at 6 p.m. See you on the sidelines.
