Dear Editor:

It was great to see the school bustling with excitement at open house on the 19th. Many who had seen the mountains of books still piled on my students' desks on Monday looked with amazement that I had created an inviting space for 4-B kids. I can't wait to get started.

Weather, work and worry have helped me lose the five pounds I needed to lose before school started. The 'worry', of course, is about the dissolution petition. I suppose I should thank the Citizens to Keep a School in Gladbrook for doing me a favor and helping me lose weight. It was a staff member at the elementary, when I asked why she'd signed the petition, who said, "We're really doing you a favor, Pattie. The state's going to come in next year or the year after and close down the district and tell everyone where they're going to school. This way you get to decide." Well, no, I said, if you look at our balance sheet, you can see that the state's not going to do that. And instead, you're deciding for our kids and you're making the decision to end my career; so, no, I'm not going to thank you.

As required by law, the school board, having been served by the Citizens with the petition to dissolve, named the commission to explore options for our district. Eventually they'll deliver a plan to the Board, and the District will vote yes or no to accept the plan to dissolve the district. It's time to get our G-R Fans to the polls on Tuesday, September 8th and say, "We Love G-R."

We all learned in school that voting is both a right and a responsibility. In our country, it's a secret ballot and when we drop our ballots into the ballot box, only we know our choices.

The school board election the day after Labor Day, Tuesday, September 8 is critical for the future of our district. I urge all who love G-R to get to the polls and vote for Anne, Eric, Lisa and Matt who will work tirelessly to save the G-R School District.

I Love G-R.
