G-R grad Peters earns spot in PGA tournament

FLOURTOWN, Pa. - Then a high school senior, Gladbrook-Reinbeck's Austin Peters placed third in the Class 2A Iowa boys state golf tournament in 2005.

Ten years later, the Reinbeck native tied for fifth at the 48th PGA Professional National Championship. The top-20 finish automatically qualifies Peters, 28, for the 2015 PGA Championship on Aug. 13-16 at Whistling Straits in Kohler, Wis.

Peters, the club professional at Wood Ranch Golf Club in Simi Valley, Calif., shot a four-day total of 1-over-par 283, closing with a 1-under 69 Wednesday at the Philadelphia Cricket Club to climb seven spots and secure qualification into his first-ever Professional Golfers' Association event.

"First time here, it's been just an amazing run the whole time," Peters told PGA.com. "This has been really everything I've looked for coming out here."

Peters opened with a round of 4-under 68, carding five birdies on his first 12 holes. He dropped as low as 5-under and eventually settled into a share of the lead after the first day.

A 4-over 74 knocked him back into the pack after the second round, but a 2-over 72 on Tuesday stabilized him in a tie for 12th place. Wednesday's big finish, despite bogeys on two of the last three holes, earned Peters qualification into the PGA Championship.

"I played really well," he said. "I kind of stumbled there coming home a little bit - you always have to look back and think about those - but yeah, I made it in and I'm sitting here and happy right now."
