Mental Health Month

May 10, 2015
Reinbeck Courier

May is Mental Health Month and calls attention to the importance of addressing mental health symptoms early, identifying potential underlying diseases, and planning an appropriate course of action on a path towards overall health. "Mental Health Month is a good time to learn the signs, ask for help if needed, and take a step towards getting healthier", says Christi Mason, Integrated Health Program Director at Black Hawk-Grundy Mental Health Center (BHGMHC).

Research shows that by ignoring symptoms, we lose ten years in which we could intervene in order to change people's lives for the better. Intervening effectively during early stages of mental illness can save lives and change the trajectories of people living with mental illnesses.

Mental Health America has developed a series of fact sheets available on its website (www.mentalhealthamerica.net/may) to help address mental health early, recognize the risk factors and signs of mental illness, and how to get help when needed.

The Integrated Health Program provides support, resources and services to Medicaid eligible adults and children living with a mental illness, in order to help achieve whole health and wellness. For more information on the Integrated Health Program at BHGMHC, please call (319) 234-2893 x 300.
