New CT scanner in use at GCMH

GRUNDY CENTER - Advanced imaging technology is available locally with the new 64-slice Computed Tomography (CT) scanner installed recently in the Grundy County Memorial Hospital (GCMH) Radiology Department. The hospital Foundation's Annual Campaign is supporting the purchase of the scanner with a goal of raising $150,000 toward the $500,000 cost.

"As part of our commitment to making radiology exams as safe as possible for our patients, the new CT offers a combination of low radiation exposure and shorter exam times," says Craig Buskohl, BS RT, Radiology Manager. "The new technology also offers sharper images that provide physicians with more information as they use the images to diagnose illness and injury."

Computed Tomography has been used as an imaging method for 40 years to visualize regions of the body 'slice by slice' and has become an indispensable tool in health care, since it is used for examinations of the entire body and in areas that cannot be visualized by standard X-ray exams. The new CT in use at GCMH is equipped with special technology to reduce radiation dose exposure from the exam by up to sixty percent, while scanning a typical patient faster and with more detail than older models.

More than 100 CT scans are performed at GCMH each month. Board-certified technologists are available to administer the exams Monday through Friday. "We are proud to have the same CT technology that is in use in Iowa's largest cities," says Buskohl. "We're also very grateful for the many generous gifts to the hospital Foundation that helped make the purchase of the new CT possible."

Grundy County Memorial Hospital is a 25-bed critical access hospital that offers emergency, inpatient, and outpatient services to residents of Grundy, Butler, Hardin and Tama counties. More information on the health care services available may be found at
