County day at the capitol

March 22, 2015
Reinbeck Courier

Travis Case, Grundy County Recorder, Rhonda R. Deters, Grundy County Auditor, and Todd Rickert, Regional Coordinator of Disability Services, joined county officials and employees from across the state in Des Moines on Wednesday, March 11, for the Seventh Annual County Day at the Capitol hosted by the Iowa State Association of Counties (ISAC). The event gave county officials and employees the opportunity to be involved in the legislative process by promoting legislation that is of importance to counties.

The event began at 10:00 a.m. in the Wallace Building auditorium. ISAC staff updated members on the status of ISAC's legislative priorities, objectives, issues that will impact counties and other related hot topics at the Capitol. From there, the group traveled to the Capitol at 11:00 a.m. The time at the Statehouse gave county officials and employees the opportunity to participate in the lobbying process by meeting with their respective legislators.

County officials focused their discussions with their legislators on ISAC's and their respective affiliates' remaining top priorities, including mental health and disability services, electronic records requests, election legislation and multi-residential property. Each of these issues has significant fiscal impacts on counties which county officials will be sharing with their Senators and Representatives.

The Capitol Rotunda was filled with ISAC affiliate member organization displays. This gave the different county offices the opportunity to introduce legislators and the public to the important services counties provide and their role in the effective administration of county services.

Lunch was provided for legislators and attending county officials in the Capitol Rotunda West Wing. This again gave county officials and employees the opportunity to interact with legislators. County Day at the Capitol gave ISAC members an opportunity to work towards improving county government.
