Black Hawk Grundy Mental Health Center affiliates with Unity Point Health

January 18, 2015
Reinbeck Courier

Black Hawk-Grundy Mental Health Center has become an affiliate of UnityPoint Health-Waterloo, effective January 1, 2015. Affiliation brings the two organizations together to provide more coordinated physical and mental health care for patients, clients and communities.

UnityPoint Health Waterloo is not buying Black Hawk-Grundy Mental Health Center. The Mental Health Center remains a community health center in its current location. Its board, leadership and staff remain in place. The Mental Health Center will continue to serve patients from all healthcare providers in Black Hawk and Grundy counties. Patients will not need to change how and where they receive care.

Many behavioral health patients also have significant physical health issues that affect their treatment outcomes. By affiliating, both organizations are working together to care for mental and physical health issues at the same time. The goal of the affiliation is to coordinate patients' physical and behavioral health care to provide better outcomes. Treating mental health issues alone without coordinated care leads to negative results.

Treating physical and mental health issues simultaneously is more effective than treating them independently. Physical illness can cause behavioral health issues, and behavioral health issues like depression, alcoholism or drug dependency often mask underlying physical health issues.

Healthcare reform has three goals: improving the patient experience of care, improving the health of populations and reducing costs. The new affiliation will support initiatives to accomplish these goals, including:

Integrating behavioral healthcare services into primary care clinics

Integrating primary care services into behavioral healthcare settings

Decreasing hospitalization of patients needing both mental and physical healthcare

Sharing clinical information among providers and sites to improve care coordination and treatment services

Expanding pharmacy, in-home and psychiatric services for patients.
