Light bulbs replaced at St. Gabriel’s Church

July 6, 2014
Reinbeck Courier

Replacing light bulbs doesn't sound like a very exciting project, does it? It may not be an exciting project, but it is a cost-saving one.

At St. Gabriel Catholic Church, Reinbeck, all 262 incandescent light bulbs were replaced with LED lights in the nave of the church. Two employees from Konken Electric, Dike and Grundy Center, along with volunteers from the parish, worked on Monday June 16th and Tuesday June 17th. Although the LED bulbs were a pricey six thousand dollars , the electrical power was reduced from 30,000 watts to 4500 watts. This will save the parish over one thousand dollars per year. Along with the savings of the electric usage, the life expectancy of the lights is twenty to twenty-five years, which is five times longer than the current bulbs.

Konken Electric provided tall stepladders and an electric lift to reach the higher lights. As Konken employees climbed high, church volunteers helped move equipment and pews, kept them supplied with the correct lights, and cleaned the light fixtures.

St. Gabriel serves the southern part of Holy Family Parish ministering to the Catholic families in parts of Grundy, Butler, and Blackhawk counties. St. Patrick Church in Parkersburg covers the northern part of the parish. The parish is planning to do a similar project at St. Patrick's next year.
