Saturday, May 10th marks the 22nd anniversary of one of America's great days of giving - The National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive.
Each year on the second Saturday in May, letter carriers across the country collect non-perishable food donations from our customers. The donations collected in Reinbeck stay in our food pantry located at the Union United Church of Christ.
Last year, in Reinbeck we collected approximately 826 pounds. This year we have a goal of 1,000 pounds, This will only be possible with the help of all of the community donating and the volunteers that help the letter carriers collect the food.
Nationally over 74 million pounds of food was collected last year, feeding an estimated 30 million people.
Our food drive's timing is crucial. Our food pantry receives the majority of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime we are depleted, entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need.
Participating in this year's Letter Carrier Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is simple. Just leave a non-perishable food donation in a bag by your mailbox by 9:00 on Saturday, May 10th and the Blackhawk Nighthawks 4-H Club will be starting to collect our donations. Your letter carrier will also pick up your donations as they come by. I invite you to join in America's great day of giving and help us in our fight to end hunger.
Items most needed are pears, yams, carrots, beets, spinach, pineapple, canned meat, cream of mushroom soup, cereal, toilet paper, shampoo, bath soap and laundry soap.
