The food cravings

April 27, 2014

What foods do you crave? Whether its a bacon and banana sandwich, or peanut butter and mustard, there are many truly bizarre food combinations out there. What some people might find as downright gross others may get the satisfied "mmmmm" feeling. For me, it's lettuce with gravy. Any gravy will do, but roast beef gravy is the best. Beats salad dressing any time!

The most common cravings are for sweets or creamy foods, and salty snacks. Stress, boredom, and smell are often the biggest triggers for food cravings, the smell of popcorn at the movie theater will automatically send you to the snack counter! Ask any mother to be, and she's probably had at least one strange craving. These are not a sign that something's missing from your diet, it's emotionally driven, and scientists say, "Go ahead and enjoy."

Following are some truly "interesting" cravings. What are yours?

Peanut butter on top of a hot hamburger, then top it off with slices of white onion. The peanut butter melts into the meat. Yum or gross?

Cut up a dill pickle and eat it with chunks of cheddar cheese.

Raw spaghetti noodles soaked in pickle juice.

Olive and jalapenos placed on top of caramel swirl ice cream.

Toast with strawberry jam, cream cheese and a fried egg

Dipping peanut butter sandwiches in a bowl of chili. (EVERY grade school kid I ever went to school with did this).

There were lots of votes for peanut butter and mayo sandwiches, as were there votes for peanut butter and cucumber or peanut butter and pickle sandwiches. Peanut butter and Cool Ranch Doritos, or peanut butter and ham sandwiches and peanut butter and tomato sandwiches also received votes, although not mine!

I'm sure you can come up with hundreds more weird combinations, but you get the idea.

There have also been lists of the perfect complement of foods paired together. Some of these are (in no particular order):

Eggs and bacon; butter and popcorn; pizza and beer; salt and pepper; burger and fries; spaghetti and meatballs; cheese and crackers; tortilla chips and salsa; mashed potatoes and gravy and Oreo's and milk.
