Factory farms stink and it's not just the smell. There have been 728 manure spills in Iowa since 1996 and Iowa now has 630 polluted waterways. Factory farms pollute our water, air, property values and quality of life.
I know this because I lived next to 30,000 corporate factory farm hogs. Once the pigs came in the quality of life on my sustainable family farm in Carroll County was gone. We couldn't enjoy a day outside because the smell of the millions of gallons of toxic manure made us gag. The gravel roads near our house were torn to shreds from the semis hauling feed and pigs, Finally, when we had enough we decided to sell our house and found out our property value was significantly depleted thanks to our "smelly corporate neighbors".
Iowans can't count on the DNR, the Iowa Legislature or Governor Branstad to protect our quality of life and water. The only people who truly work to protect the interests of everyday people are members of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (Iowa CC).
Iowa CCI is the top group in the state stopping factory farms before they're built. If you find out there's a factory farm building near you call Iowa CCI at 515-282-0484. They offer 20 years organizing experience working to stop factory farms in Iowa, technical assistance on applications and DNR procedure, media assistance and an analysis of the political landscape in your area and beyond.
