REINBECK - It took free throws down the stretch for the sixth-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck boys' basketball team to finish off an opponent it had defeated twice by an average of 26 points as the Rebels held off BCLUW 61-51 in Friday's Class 1A District 4 quarterfinal.
Joe Smoldt finished with a game-high 19 points, Zach Pierce had 16 and Camden Kickbush 11 as the Rebels (20-2) completed a three-game sweep of the Comets, though the third time wasn't so charming.
BCLUW (9-14) never led but never left Gladbrook-Reinbeck's rearview mirror, yet the Comets couldn't make the pass. G-R's guards got the job done at the free-throw line to seal the victory.
Chase Clark led the Rebels with nine rebounds and Pierce had eight, while Smoldt's six steals helped G-R move on in tournament play. Gladbrook-Reinbeck will face GMG (14-8) in Tuesday's first district semifinal at Grundy Center starting at 6:30 p.m.
BCLUW got a team-leading 16 points from Conner Ubben, while Lane Caster contributed 11 points as the Comets suffered just their second loss in the last seven games.
