Dear Editor,

Farm Bureau is actively engaged in the issues which effect farmers, landowners, and all of Iowa's rural residents. Farm Bureau is truly a grassroots organization where our farmer, delegates from each of the 100 county Farm Bureaus from Iowa's 99 counties propose, research, debate and determine the policies of the state organization it's a membership driven policy agenda not a board driven process. The past two years proposals regarding utility line easements across Iowa farmland have been discussed at the annual policy conference. Last summer the delegates had a lengthy debate and passed a state policy that states, "A project to transport energy is in the public's best interest when it benefits Iowa's energy consumers or producers or improves national energy security."

The current opposition to utility line easements is well noted by the Grundy County Farm Bureau as well as other county Farm Bureaus across the state and another discussion and debate may take place again this year at the policy conference as our grassroots process takes place. The Grundy County Farm Bureau has heard from both landowners who oppose the easements as well as landowners who are satisfied with the compensation being offered. After in depth and lengthy discussions the county adopted this position statement, "It is the position of the Grundy County Farm Bureau Board of Directors that the enforcement of eminent domain never be utilized in the condemnation/acquisition of private property unless a clear and convincing case be made that such condemnation/acquisition is necessary to the public interest/benefit. We strongly encourage all land owners to know their property rights and always consult with expert legal counsel before entering into any contractual obligations regarding property ownership and use."

Grundy County Farm Bureau
