Gov. Branstad and Lt. Gov. Reynolds to join Iowans in celebrating Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

DES MOINES Governor Terry Branstad and Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds will participate in the State of Iowa celebration honoring the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, January 20, 2014.

Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds will provide welcoming comments and present a proclamation at the 2014 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Ceremony, hosted by the Iowa Department of Human Rights' Office on the Status of African Americans. The annual event begins at 10:45 a.m. at The Euclid Room, 2540 East Euclid Avenue in Des Moines.

Reddit Hudson, NAACP Regional Field Organizer for Region IV will provide the keynote address. He formerly served as the Political Action Chair for the Executive Committee of the NAACP St. Louis City Branch, Program Associate for the American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri (ACLU-EM), and a St. Louis police officer. Mr. Hudson joined the ACLU-EM as a Racial Justice Associate in 2005. In addition to being a strong advocate for criminal justice reform, he also continues his advocacy and activism relative to issues including economic empowerment, health care, education, criminal justice reform, and voting rights. He sits on the U.S. Attorneys Hate Crimes Task Force in St. Louis and is a regular media commentator on criminal justice and racial justice issues. He has traveled the country speaking at national conferences for the ACLU and NAACP.

Other local and state dignitaries will be in attendance, and performances from Movement 515 and other local talent. The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Achievement Awards will be presented to: Simon Estes, renowned bass-baritone of Des Moines, Charles Mercer of Ankeny, and Royceann Porter of Iowa City.

Also to be awarded will be the winners of the 4th annual essay contest for youth across the state.
