Thursday, Dec. 19th, G-R 8th grade Boys Basketball team took on the Spartans on our home court. After losing last season as 7th graders by 8 points, we were ready. This was a great game as G-R got out to an early lead and then saw Grundy Center hit some long 3 pointers towards the end. You left feeling you had just seen two talented teams get after it, lots of noise and hustle by both schools. Each school's pride was felt in the gym. G-R is now 4-1 on season moving into Holiday break. With two of our more physical inside players out Gage Murty and Bruce Schick due to injuries, others would have to step up, and everyone did just that. The young Rebels were led by 3 players: Walker Thede season high 14 points who just played outstanding on both ends of the court, his excellence displayed at all times, Caden Kickbush 12 points our offensive floor leader, Mason Skovgard 6 points who played inside and played hard and kept his cool against some talented big guys, followed by Matt Johannsen got into foul trouble early contributed 3 points, and Joel Davis hitting a 3 point shot just before halftime concluded our scoring, but Kyle Koppen (1 assist, 2 rebounds, 3 steals), who started his first junior high game, (not out for basketball last season) helped us tremendously with his team play, also Hunter Smoldt 4 blocks, 3 rebounds, 1 steal, Will Blakesley 2 big timely rebounds, Owen Beach 1 steal, Josh Peterson 1 rebound helping out the team. This victory goes out to Brad for your words of advice to me. Our upcoming season schedule is: Jan. 9th @ South Tama (Toledo), Jan. 14th @ Wellsburg, Jan 16th home (Gladbrook) vs. S. Hardin, Jan. 20th @ E. Marshall (Gilman), Jan. 23rd @ BCLUW (Union), Jan 27th home (Gladbrook) vs. W. Marshall, with a starting time of 4:15 p.m. for 8th graders.
