ACKLEY - Class 1A No. 8-ranked Gladbrook-Reinbeck won its 13th straight NICL West Division boys' basketball game, holding off a resistant AGWSR squad 48-42 on Tuesday night.
G-R freshman guard Joe Smoldt made four 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 16 points, adding a team-high four assists in the win. Zach Pierce posted a double-double of 13 points and 13 rebounds as the Rebels (4-0, 4-0) remained unbeaten despite a stern challenge.
AGWSR (4-2, 2-2) was limited to a season-low 42 points, with freshman Nathan Karsjens leading the way with 12 points. Austin Heitland had nine points, nine rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots, and Owen Abkes chipped in seven points for the Cougars.
Sully Hofmeister led AGWSR with six assists.
Gladbrook-Reinbeck hosts the team with which it shared last year's NICL West crown - West Marshall - on Friday night, while AGWSR visits South Tama.
