The Reinbeck Park Board, in cooperation with the American Volkssport Association (AVA) Regional Coordinator and the Grundy County Wellness Coalition, will be hosting Reinbeck's first ever volksmarch, on September 28, 2013. Considering Reinbeck's deep german heritage, and the great number of walking enthusiasts in this area, volksmarching should be a natural fit for our community.
Volksmarching (also called "volkswalking") started in Germany and, simply defined, is a personal fitness sport and recreation program offering noncompetitive walks (as well as other sport events) around the world. You may choose your time to start within the start/finish "window" and participate in the walk at your own pace. Volkssporting in the United States is sponsored by the American Volkssport Association (AVA) which has a nationwide, grassroots network of about 300 active clubs presenting more than 3,000 volkssporting events each year. Founded in 1976, the AVA is an educational nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation dedicated to promoting fun, fitness and fellowship.
Volkssporting events take place throughout the year, all around the country. Historic and scenic sites are often selected for their enjoyment. Trails are carefully laid out and marked and easy to follow directions or maps are provided. Often times, volksmarches are a destination event which allow participants to enjoy parts of the country they would not otherwise experience.
Trails are rated based upon the challenge the route presents. The designated start point is open for several hours to allow you to begin your volkssporting adventure at your leisure. Trails have checkpoints along the route and are monitored for security and safety.
In the volkssporting tradition, you frequently find volkssporters gathered at the finish point where they take time to enjoy friends, and at some events, entertainment or refreshments.
The Reinbeck volksmarch will be held in conjunction with the Reinbeck Art Festival and Broad Street Brewery's Becktoberfest. Volksmarchers will be able to browse the unique art and/or enjoy german food and Broad Street Brewery beers, before, during, or after their walk. The volksmarch will begin and end at the Elmwood Park Center Shelter Building. Two 5K (= 3.1 miles) loops will be marked out, one town loop and one nature loop. Walkers are welcome to do one or both loops. Participants can start the walk any time between 9:00 a.m. and noon and must be finished with the walk by 3:00 p.m. There is a cost for IVV credit or for non credit. Please check the Reinbeck City website or www.ava.org for more information.
