G-R Dollars for Scholars annual Running Makes Cents

July 28, 2013
Reinbeck Courier

The annual Dollars for Scholars Running Makes Cents 5K & 2 Mile Walk was held Saturday, July 6th. This event is supported by many generous businesses and services. Gold level event sponsors this year are Covenant Clinic Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare; Grundy County Memorial Hospital; Lincoln Savings Bank; Lon's Plumbing & Heating Company; Luethje Auto Sales and Moeller & Walter. Silver level sponsors are B & L Insurance; Bill Dunkelberger and Konken Electric.

Bronze level sponsors are: Casey's General Store; Heartland Co-op; Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc.; Rickert Law Office; Tranquility on Main; Trunck's Country Foods and Wildflower. Keith and JoAnn Sash supported the race by lending the group a portable microphone for our student master of ceremony, Matt Roeding. The Reinbeck ambulance crew was on standby throughout the race. Adam Watermiller volunteered to lead the race by bicycle.

The G-R Dollars for Scholars mission is to raise money and receive gifts of money to provide scholarships for post high school education. The chapter acts as a vehicle to receive and distribute money and gifts from individuals and businesses who wish to support Gladbrook-Reinbeck Dollars for Scholars. This year our chapter gave over $12,000 in scholarships to G-R graduating seniors.

The kid's fun run is an entertaining event to watch. Kids from 2 years old to 7 years old participated in this free, short foot race. Steve Tscherter generously donated toy Hot Wheel cars for each youngster participating in this activity. The kids love the cars!

The 2 mile walk event is an estimation challenge. Participants estimate how long it will take to walk 2 miles. The person with the closest actual time to their estimated time wins. This year out first place walker is Lisa Swanson. Lisa's estimate was within 1 minute of her actual time. Second place is Sheila Kiehne.
