Derby results!

June 23, 2013
Cole Anderson - Grundy County Conservation Naturalist/Technician , Reinbeck Courier

The weather forecast didn't look good for this past Saturday morning so I was very excited when I woke up and it wasn't raining. We've never had to cancel our fishing derby yet and we kept the streak alive this year. It actually turned in to the nicest day we've ever had for the fishing derby even though it rained at the very end.

Around fifty people registered for the event. Fishing wasn't very good to start the day off. We didn't have a fish turned in for almost 2 hours. But soon the fishing picked up and we were weighing fish left and right. Bringing home the prize for biggest Bass was Kay Schmidt with the fish weighing 1.6 pounds and the winner of the biggest pan fish was Jaiden Soppe with a Bluegill weighing .51 pounds. Despite hard efforts by many anglers no one caught a single Catfish but we had a good turn out and everyone had a great time. Our fishing derby is my favorite event we do every year. I love watching all the kids having a blast fishing and seeing how excited they get to come weigh their fish to see if they're the winner. I enjoyed watching them so much that I had to take my own son out fishing the very next day.

Fishing is a great way to get someone outside and enjoying nature and our fishing derby is the perfect excuse to do it. Plus you get the bonus of a little friendly competition and the chance to win some great prizes. We appreciate everyone coming out and taking part in the derby.

I feel that the fishing derby has become one of the best ways for the community to come out and enjoy the Grundy County lake. I love seeing so many familiar faces that come back every year with their families and friends. None of this would be possible without the support of Peoples Savings Bank. PSB has been sponsoring the derby for three years now and we feel that it has gotten better each year because of it. Other businesses that offered support are: Doc's Catfish Bait, Kwik Star, Norby's and Ubbens. Everyone that came out made the derby such a great success. Hope to see you again next year.
