A small group of G-R High School students got together with a plan to raise $5000 for their classmate Noah Orht and his family to take a family vacation. Noah is a sophomore at G-R High School who is fighting Ewing's Sarcoma, a rare cancer that affects a range of people from teenagers to young adults. He was diagnosed in February 2012, in January of 2013 he had surgery to remove three lesions, during this surgery two tumors were discovered in his lungs. It was originally thought that they had gotten all the cancer, but a CT scan two months later revealed that they were growing. Noah has been going through chemotherapy and radiation treatments ever since.
The first fundraiser the students held was a middle school dance at the Elementary School in Reinbeck on May 4th; the students paid a cover charge and in addition made generous freewill donations that resulted in raising $1300.00. There was music and dancing, Noah's mom Kathy Orht provided the best monster cookies ever, and Leah Holman of Leah Kake's donated four dozen cupcakes. The most exciting time of the evening came when Noah himself made a guest appearance. The middle school kids created a tunnel to welcome Noah and the high school students held a dollar dance for anyone, including some boys, to take a spin on the dance floor with Noah and a number of friends he arrived with.
The students will hold another middle school dance on May 18th at the elementary school in Reinbeck from 8-11 p.m. In addition to the dance the students are planning the "Neon Support Orht 5K Run/1 Mile Walk on June 21st. The race will begin at dusk with cash prizes for the top three male and female finishers, age group medals and door prizes. Registration forms will be available soon, look for them in local Gladbrook and Reinbeck businesses. Like us and join us at "Neon Support Orht 5K Run/1 Mile Walk" on Facebook.
