To be eligible for National Honor Society, you must be a junior or senior with a grade point average must be above a 3.25. Then, there is an application process a student must follow. The questions of the application varied widely, from asking what classes a student had taken during the school year, to why they deserve to be in NHS, to their thoughts about teenagers' use of alcohol and drugs. Some other questions included: What ways would you like to see the Gladbrook- Reinbeck School change? What extra-curricular activities do you participate in?
What sets you apart from your peers by means of service activities at school and in the community? What future plans do you have after high school?
The application was rounded out by a 250 worded essay describing your role as a model citizen of your community and how it affects your role as a student a Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School. Once the application is submitted to the woman in charge, Mrs. Jennifer Strohbehn, a committee of teachers review the completed applications, and if you receive three yes votes, you are accepted.
Now you know how someone is chosen to be in NHS, but what IS the National Honor Society? As described at www.nhs.us, "The National Honor Society is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students." The article goes on to explain, "More than just an honor roll, NHS serve to honor the students who have demonstrated excellence in areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character." This organization has been around since 1921, and it's still the most honorable title a student could receive in their high school career. It's estimated that over one million students are in NHS.
"Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service." The National Honor Society is a prestigious organization that is still honored here at Gladbrook- Reinbeck High School!
