Saturday, February 2nd was the date for state large group speech in Decorah. The Gladbrook-Reinbeck speech team took a total of nine acts to state, consisting of over thirty students. All of the performances that day gave their best performances, and at the end of the day, it paid off on their score sheets.
The choral reading, After Death, written by Cortney Crozier, was one of the largest acts of the day. It starred twelve G-R students: Cody Ward, Cole Goos, Paul Chamberlain, Cortney Crozier, Paige Kromas, Shelby Yates, Ashley Moore, Erin Wentzien, Brittany Yates, Mikayla Saak, Ashley Sieh and Brooke Beenken. Although the act received three II's from their judges, there was not a dry eye in the audience after they had finished their poignant performance. A Matter of Husbands is another act that received three II's for their rating. This was the second year in a row that the acting duo of Kayla Fobian and Breanna Schlichtmann was able to make it to state in an ensemble piece together.
A group improv starring Rebecca Franksain, Jenny Schildroth and Alyona Strohbehn received two II's and a I for an overall II rating. This was Jenny and Alyona's first year ever in group improv. A Reader's theatre entitled Frumpled FairyTales received an overall I rating, with two I's and a II. This Reader's Theatre was the largest act of the day, starring Cody Ward, Cole Goos, Hanna Christopher, Carley Crozier, Amber Brandt, Callie Kuehl, Rachel Bown, Kelly
Brockett, Brandi Yates, Kayla Fobian, Madde Wild, Amanda Grunklee and Kayli Folkerts.
Another group that received an overall I rating was the one-act play ensemble of Rebecca Franksain, Alyona Strohbehn, Ashley Moore, Sadie Walton, Paige Kromas and Erin Wentzein. They performed an abridged version of the well known "Steel Magnolias".
This year, Gladbrook-Reinbeck had four different groups who received straight I's at state. A mime starring Cydney Rose, Jenny Schildroth, Emily Johnson, Moriah Hoepner and Jenna Hoffman was one of these acts. Also, an original short film by Braden Heithoff, Joseph Linder, Tyler Wrage, and Aaron Shouse received all I's from their judges. Two improv groups also received all I's: Joseph Linder and Braden Heithoff, and Alyssa Christopher and Sadie Walton. Both of these improv groups were nominated to perform at allstate and received the title of Allstate non-performing. They attended allstate at Iowa State and received medals for their outstanding performances.
All of these acts will be featured in the spring speech showcase Saturday March 23rd and Sunday March 24th. Make sure you come out to see all wonderful acts that the G-R speech team has to offer!
