Jay and Jeanne Hansen were awarded the February 'Gary Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award' during a ceremony attended by more than 180 people at their farm on February 14. The Hansens own and operate Hansen's Farm Fresh Dairy along with their four sons Brent, Brad, Blair and Blake who are the sixth generation on the farm. Jay and Jeanne also have a daughter Lynn who currently lives in Omaha. Jay and Jeanne have 15 grandchildren who will be the 7th generation to be a part of the farming operation, if they decide to take that road.
Iowa Deputy Secretary of Agriculture Jay Johnson presented the Hansens with the award in front of family, friends and neighbors on Valentines Day.
The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor award, sponsored by the Coalition to Support Iowa's Farmers (CSIF), recognizes Iowa livestock farmers who take pride in doing things right. This includes caring for the environment and their livestock and being good neighbors.
"Without the many blessings from above and the efforts of our sons and families, we would not be where we are today," said Jeanne Hansen. "Our thanks to all of them, as well as our employees and customers for making this possible."
"Receiving this award is an honor and a surprise. It is our family's privilege to serve our neighbors, friends, community and our many customers," said Jay Hansen.
Joanne Vlasak nominated the Hansen family for the award for their remarkable commitment and passion for their community, their livestock, the products they produce, and the environment. "The Hansen family not only maintains a high-producing, healthy herd of dairy cows, but also has a tremendous passion for telling the farm- to-table story to customers that stop by their on-farm store. The family also opens up their farm for visitor and elementary school tours," says Vlasak.
"It's great to recognize a farm family like the Hansens who not only run a state-of-the-art dairy, but openly share agriculture's story and open their farm up for tours which provide educational opportunities for visitors. The Hansens are a great example of a farm family that is passionate about agriculture, their neighbors and the community," said CSIF Executive Director, Brian Waddingham.
The Wergin Good Farm Neighbor Award, presented by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Iowa Ag Radio Network in partnership with CSIF, is presented nine times annually to an Iowa farm family who raises livestock. It's given in honor of distinguished WHO Radio farm broadcaster Gary Wergin and recognizes families who take pride in being good neighbors and stewards of the land.
