WATERLOO-Hawkeye Community College is offering two opportunities in February for assistance in filling out financial aid forms for college. Paying for college is always a concern, and the first step to secure financial aid is to complete the "Free Application for Federal Student Aid" (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov. This task can be overwhelming, and one overlooked detail can slow the process down.
College-bound students and/or their parents can get assistance at the Experience Hawkeye financial aid day at Hawkeye Community College on Saturday, February 16, from 9:00 a.m. 1:30 p.m. This visit day has an emphasis on the financial aid process for students and parents. Participants will get step-by-step assistance with the FAFSA by the college's Financial Aid office professionals. Participants can also meet one-on-one with the college's Financial Aid professionals to get help in completing their FAFSA online.
Applying early can make a big difference in the amount of aid that a student receives, as some aid is distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Even if you are considering loan options, you will want to get your name on the list for the best education grants and loans that the government has to offer. Bring your 2012 Federal income tax return to this special event.
Preregistration is required. Register online at www.hawkeyecollege.edu/go/experience-hawkeye or by calling the college's Admissions office at 319-296-4000.
A second opportunity for assistance with the financial aid process will be held at Hawkeye on Tuesday, February 19, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. in Room 215 of the Health Education and Services Center, located on the northwest side of campus. Financial aid experts will be there to assist with filing the FAFSA, as well as to give advice. Scholarship information will also be given.
Financial aid professionals will be volunteering to assist college-bound students in filling out financial aid papers during Iowa College Access Network's (ICAN) College Goal Sunday. This free program is designed to assist students in the area with properly filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) on time. The FAFSA must be submitted by March 10 to be eligible for state aid. Individuals with questions or unusual circumstances can call the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) at 877-272-4692. No appointment is necessary and all services are free. Students and/or parents may attend individually, but it is suggested that students bring at least one parent. Additional details can be found at www.IowaCGS.org.
If planning to attend either event, students and parents should obtain a federal personal identification number (PIN) at www.pin.ed.gov. Also visit www.fafsa.gov and either begin the FAFSA or download and fill out a FAFSA on the Web Worksheet, and be sure to bring your password with you. Students and parents should also bring: their social security number, driver's license number, date of birth, W-2 forms and/or other records of income earned last year, current bank statements and investment records, records of untaxed income received last year, last year's business and farm records, and alien registration number if not a U.S. citizen.
For more information on these two events, please call Hawkeye Community College's Admissions office at 319-296-4000.
