According to Justin Foss, spokesperson for Alliant Energy the power in Reinbeck went out on Tuesday, January, 8 2013 after a lightning arrestor broke. These units absorb surges from lightning strikes, and was likely damaged in the summer storms and especially the blizzard late in 2012. It finally gave out in the late hours on Monday night. Foss says, "We worked with three different utilities to restore the power and most customers were back on within an hour."
On November 22, 2012, Alliant Energy believes that the wind that day caused a small wire to dangle into other lines and cause a fault. This interrupted power for about 90 minutes starting at 2:50 p.m.
