Dollars for Scholars is a great organization that allows G-R high school students an opportunity to receive scholarships for their future education. The only requirement for scholarship eligibility is to work at least one fundraising event, this will allow them the opportunity to earn from $250 to $1,000 in scholarship money. To receive information about the application, students need to see Mr. Reisner in the high school.
This program's main fundraisers are the phone-a-thon in November, in which students call local community members asking for their help by way of donation. The 5k run and pancake breakfast, around the Fourth of July, is also a big event for Dollars for Scholars, where people come from all over the state to participate. Dollars for Scholars has also been busy taking quarters, at halftime of the basketball games, as the young people take a chance at making 3 pointers. They're also selling seat cushions and umbrellas. "Recently we have been selling chocolate chip cookies and selling raffle tickets for an Ipad and other prizes, at basketball games," shared Dollars for Scholars Treasurer Brenda Snider. These fundraisers are great opportunities for the high school students to help an excellent cause, and also make sure that they are eligible for scholarships when they graduate from high school.
"We couldn't offer these scholarships, to our Gladbrook-Reinbeck High School students, without the awesome, continued support of the local community members and businesses," says Brenda Snider. "We were able to offer over $18,000, in scholarships, to approximately 30 seniors in last years graduating class."
All donations are appreciated and a donation of $250 or more would allow you the opportunity to offer a scholarship in honor, or memory of someone. For more information please call Brenda Snider (319) 345-2143.
